Cask ale, also known as cask-conditioned beer, is beer that completes its conditioning naturally inside the vessel from which it is served.

How is cask ale different from keg beer?

Cask ale develops its carbonation naturally through fermentation in the cask and is traditionally served without the external gas pressure commonly used for keg beer.

Why is cask ale less carbonated?

Cask ale is naturally carbonated through fermentation and is vented before serving, producing the softer carbonation traditionally associated with cask-conditioned beer.

A firkin is a traditional British beer cask holding approximately nine imperial gallons, or about 41 litres.
